The History Department at HKU is one of the oldest and most prestigious centers for the study of history in East Asia and the Pacific. Founded in 1912, the history department has grown from a unit of one professor at its creation to become a vibrant and diverse department of fourteen staff members today.
A commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and engagement defines our department. We are one of the best teaching and research departments at the University of Hong Kong. When you study with us at either the undergraduate or postgraduate level, the past will come alive. The discipline of history will seem relevant not only as a means to understand the past, but also as a way to comprehend better the world in which we live today. In our courses, you will be encouraged by a community of dedicated, research active scholars to think critically and creatively about the past. Moreover, you will be taught to develop and articulate your own ideas and opinions about the histories of many different societies, nations, empires, people, and important events.
