Professor Xu was the first and permanent holder of Wen Chao Chen Chair in history and East Asian Studies at Kalamazoo College, an elite private college in the United States. He joined the University of Hong Kong in July 2009 from Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University where he was a fellow in 2008-2009.
