Bertrand Tavernier's Coup de Torchon
30 Nov 2017 6:15 p.m. |
The Department of History invites you to a series of movie screenings related to the course HIST2108 Empire and the Making of Modern France, taught by Dr. François Drémeaux.
The series will pursue with a 1981 movie, directed by Bertrand Tavernier and served by a prestigious French casting (Philippe Noiret, Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Pierre Marielle, etc). Coup de torchon is an adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel Pop.1280, but changes the setting to French West Africa in 1938. In a little town, lost in savannah, Lucien Cordier is a policeman unable to impose his authority, treated with scorn by everybody. One day, he decides to take revenge on all his tormentors in a very devious way. A Film Noir and a comedy at the same time, Coup de torchon is certainly one of the most unconventional Tavernier's movie.
Screening in French with English subtitles. All are welcome. No registration is required.
