Crystal Kwok (郭錦恩) explores in-between spaces and embraces interdisciplinary approaches to her work both as a scholar and filmmaker. She established her career in Hong Kong as an actress, writer, director, and controversial talk show host on Cable TV and RTHK confronting bold topics around the body. Her debut feature film, The Mistress (1999), won the Audience Choice Awards at the Deauville Asiatic Film Festival. Her feature documentary Blurring the Color Line (2022) won multiple awards including Best Documentary at the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific Film Festival and the Mira Nair Rising Female Filmmaker Award at the Harlem International Film Festival.

With a PhD in Performance Studies and an advanced Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Kwok currently is a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in the MALCS, Gender Studies, and History Department. Kwok’s pedagogy is rooted in experiential learning. Her work is committed to amplifying voices of women and marginalized communities with two exciting new film projects in the pipeline. Her newly curated courses include History Through Sex Work and a performance-based course, Staging the Body and continues to push boundaries on multiple fronts.
