Dr. Birgit Schneider completed her Master's degree in Japanese Studies
and History at Leipzig University in Germany, and earned her PhD from Washington State University
in the U.S. with a dissertation on the reintegration of demobilized soldiers in post-World War
II West Germany and Japan. She first joined the History Department in 2010 as a Research
Assistant.

Current Research Projects
Her research focuses on the transitions from war to peace after the Second World War, specifically in Germany and Japan, and includes themes such as occupation, totalitarianism and democracy, and culture and identity. Her interests further extend to transnational and global historical developments during the Cold War. She speaks English, French, German, and Japanese.
